The practice of sending off wedding guests with a tambulam bag comprising betel leaf, coconut, banana and other things auspicious is a tradition no Hindu household would break. But, Chennai Mayor R. Subramanian went a step ahead by turning environment-friendly at the wedding of his son Dr. Ilancherizhiyan, which was solemnised on Thursday at Kalaivannar Arangam.
Around 25,000 bags of saplings were distributed to the guests in the morning, and we hear another 5,000 will be handed over at the reception. About six varieties of saplings, each measuring between one and two feet, including those of neem, teak and naval, was the Mayor’s style of sending off guests.
Apparently, the Mayor had been working on this initiative for the last six months. No prizes for guessing the message he was driving through each of his guests. Make the city green!
